In this episode, I talk about how "deciding" what you want in life is more about cutting away everything that doesn't support what you want. I also introduce "The Ceiling Tile Test" -- my way of determining what's truly important.

01:02  Hey, hey everybody. Thanks and welcome to episode one of the Invest In Your Life podcast. I'm Patrick King. Thanks for being here today. Uh, the, the big takeaway from today's episode comes from a conversation I had with my girlfriend on Sunday night about what it takes to actually decide on what we want our lives to be and, and that, that happiness can come first. And a rich life can come first if you don't already have money. Um, it's mutually not mutually exclusive, is that right? I think that's right. So, uh, so that's the big takeaway. So stay tuned for that. Uh, first though, I want to get into a bit of gratitude.

02:01  So a gratitude that I have today is that, um, it springs close. It's so close. It's the little chilly out. The Dogwood tree out in the backyard is blooming. It's very beautiful. And, uh, the warm weather is right around the corner here in Atlanta. And I've been missing that because I do not like the cold. And I do actually kind of prefer to be a little hot, unlike a lot of people. Uh, so I am, I am so grateful that spring’s right around the corner. Uh, so there, so let's get into the topic. Does you are,

02:38  Okay. So the Invest In Your Life topic du jour, is deciding what you want. And it sounds kind of oversimplified, but I think there's some nuance that I want to talk with you about that maybe, or maybe you haven't thought about. Um, you know, the first thing when I think about deciding what it is that you want, and when I've talked to clients, when I talk to people in general, um, they've got a lot of conflicting desires about what they want from life. So the quick and dirty way to get down to the bottom of this is to think about, you know, what, what is that thing that you're going to regret not having done when you're sitting there in the hospital on your deathbed looking at the stupid ceiling tiles in the hospital room, what does that one thing that you're going to regret not having done in your life?

03:29  You know, if it's, um, if it's maybe, you know, traveling and seeing all seven continents or, you know, whatever it is, you know, insert your bucket list item here, right? Um, what does that thing, you know, at the end of the day when you're about to check out and nothing else really matters, what does that one thing going to be? And let's bring that to the front burner pronto. Like, let's, let's don't screw around. Let's, uh, it's so easy to sit here and say, one day I'm going to do this. You know, one day may never come. We've got no guarantee for another day on this earth. So, uh, let's, let's get busy living, right? So Annie, and here's the most important part and here's the nuance to this that, that I want to bring to you today is that, is that um, the decide the word decide. The Latin root of decide means to cut away.

04:26  So when you decide to pursue something that's truly important to you, you cut away all the bullshit. So, so think about all of the bullshit financial goals that aren't even really yours to begin with. You know, whatever that is on your death bed, are you really going to give a shit if you drove a Jaguar or Mercedes or whatever? Insert your fancy car here. Or if you had that designer kitchen or whatever it was, if you're about to check out, is that really going to matter? And I think really at the end of the day, that's the ultimate currency in deciding what a real financial goal is or what a real life goal is. And if it doesn't pass that test, like it's time to cut it away or it's time to put it on the back burner. Like those things are nice. Like I'm certainly not against those things.

05:20  And you know, I've gone through points in my life where those were important goals to me, but, but they just don't matter to most people in the context of I'm going to check out tomorrow. Oh Shit. Right? So, so decide to cut away the crazy crap that isn't going to matter on your deathbed. So let's be true to you and screw what everybody else thinks. You know, if you're going to, if people want to live amazing lives, but they don't realize amazing people are kind of weird and they look strange and they do things differently. It's easy to, uh, to be afraid of looking weird.

06:05  You know, but that's really what it takes. And, um, you know, the fear of looking stupid as, as health, so many people back. And um, yeah, so there you go. So, you know, once you've decided, once you've cut away the things that aren't important, let's make a plan, right? Uh, let's get to it. We're not guaranteed another day. Um, you, if you're listening to this podcast or if you're watching this on YouTube, you have enough to, to do what you need to do or you want to do. It's just a matter of deciding, right? So, uh, if you want to travel the world, what's stopping you?

06:41  Okay?

06:42  If you've got the big house with the big mortgage payment and the fancy car with a big note against it, you know, what's stopping you from selling those things and doing what you want in life?

06:59  You are

07:00  at the end of the day, you can't give up the things that, that are keeping you from doing those goals. So, you know, we get one go around here on this life, so why are we limiting ourselves? And, um, and so yeah, you don't need 1 million bucks to, to feel happy and have freedom. You really don't. You just need to choose to live that way. Um, it's, so, yeah, you just have to decide. You don't have to, you don't have to wait till you're rich. To be an, to have an amazing life. You just have to be able to decide what's really important and give up what's not. So, uh, I'm not saying you don't save here or don't be financially prudent. Um, I'm not saying that, hey, I've got two kids that, uh, that are, uh, in grade school and just go ahead and sell and sell the house and take off and go travel the world and let your spouse deal with it.

07:58  It's kind of a dick move. Um, but you know, you can say, all right Kiddos, um, you know, we want to travel, you know, load up the RV. We're going to homeschool you and drive around the country. All right. Yeah. Okay. You're doing, you're traveling. You know, you're, you're also giving up some stuff to do it too. So it's a real test of what's important. Uh, so yeah, there's a middle ground here. I think that, that, um, that's available to all of us, uh, when we get away from a lot of this consumer culture that's been, that's been drilled into our heads for decades now. So, uh, having this can come first and if you're miserable getting rich, guess what? You'll be miserable when you get there. And if you're already rich and you're not happy, guess what? It's, it's in you. It's between your ears and you already have the resources to do what you need to do.

08:54  So to cut away what's not important. And that's kind of what I got on that topic for today. Um, so yeah, hit me up if you've got comments or questions on that. Uh, I would love to Kind of hear what, what you think, what's important to you. You know, what is, when you think about, I call it the ceiling tile test, what is what passes the ceiling tile test for you? If you're laying in a hospital bed and you've got hours to live and you're staring at those stupid ceiling tiles, you know, what really matters, what will you regret not having done or not having been or not having said to someone, hit me up with that. That's some heavy stuff. But like, hey, let's, let's get real here. Like, shit gets real. Let's, uh, let's don't, let's don't fuck around.

09:45  Okay. Moving on. Uh, ordering off the menu is the next section that I have here. Just making up stuff by the way, that I think is fine. So I'm creating the show that I want to create for myself and Shit, man. Hope you like it. And if not, tell me, tell me what you want to hear. And a, I may or may not do it, so we'll, we'll see. Also, you may have noticed there is some profanity in this show and that's just Kind of who I am. Um, if you're offended by profanity, there may be other shows for you.

10:21  Uh, so that's what's up. Um, yeah, not apologizing and, uh, okay, whoa. I got off track here. Oh, oh. So the next section that, uh, that I want to get to is the ordering off the menu section. I just noticed that like these, uh, these sections, I've got our food related. Oh, you know, there may be a reason for that. I'll get to that in a second. But, uh, so when I think about, you know, the life that I want to create and my clients and the people in my life who, who are, are really trying to up level their lives and to, and to, and to really live, like the theme that I've, I've seen a lot is this, this idea of ordering off the menu. And for me, ordering off the menu in life means that you can kind of create the life that you want.

11:17  You don't have to pick the cookie cutter version. Right? So the example that I kind of want to bring today is for me in just how I'm ordering off the menu and my life is that not only did I break away from one of the large independent Ria, you know, fiduciary fee only firms in town, it was a great firm. But, but, you know, I wanted to have control over my time and the way that I practiced and the kind of clients that I practiced with. So one of the freedoms that I created for myself is that, uh, I, I created this practice where I don't work with haters. You know, I, I say it's a values niche. Uh, and, and so, yeah, no haters is a values of, of value of mine. You know, growing up in South Carolina, there were, and this, this obviously wasn't everybody, but there were a good number of people who, because I was a straight white male, assumed that I was homophobic and racist and misogynist.

12:26  And that followed me here to Georgia when I lived out or worked outside the perimeter. Um, it's a little bit better inside the perimeter, but, um, you know, even with clients that I've worked with in the past, just to assume that because I'm straight white and male, um, homophobic, sexist and racist and antisemitic or whatever. So, so I put it out there that I just don't like, I don't want to work with those folks. Um, it's, you know, life's too short to be hating on people. And I think actually our, uh, Atlanta's, um, Atlanta's motto is the city too busy to hate. Um, but we are certainly busy, eh, but I think there are plenty of haters here too. That's a whole ‘nother thing. But anyway, that's how I order off the menu and my life is that life's too short and, and I don't, uh, I don't, I don't want to have that kind of negativity in my life, so I choose not to.

13:26  And recently I, um, I got back from a retreat from the advisor coaching program that I'm in. I'm in this, uh, advisor coaching program that is the, it's called the Limitless Advisor coaching program, uh, with some of the best financial advisors in the United States. Uh, amazing people. And I've actually had people come up to me and asked me, they said, is that really what you do? Is that, do you have that on your website? I'm like, yeah. So it really kind of strikes me that even amongst some of the best financial advisers in the world, you know, they, they don't know that this is possible. And it took me a little while to come around to the, I could actually do this, but the funny thing is, out of everything on my website, that's the one thing that people lock in on and people comment on the most and I get, um, I get a lot of people who, who that resonates with. And A, and I'm glad, I'm glad I do because you know, life's too short. So that's ordering off the menu for this episode. Um, yeah, I'm, I got to get better at these transitions.

I've been to Costa Rica a couple of times, most recently here in January. But Pura Vida is more, it's kind of something like pure, pure life and pure living. Um, and for me, for, for the sections of this podcast, for this section, for me it means, you know, what am I doing to really kind of live life to the fullest and, and deciding, you know, deciding what's important to me and it's might be fun stuff and it might be, uh, more of, um, like hardcore stuff like, so for this episode, I just want to just introduce you to my weight loss challenge and, uh, so I'm putting it out there. So this is like next level accountability, right?

16:09  Uh, so this is a, a march, March, middle of March, 2019 or 2019. Uh, started this last week and I was 200 pounds. So I enjoyed football season and the holidays a lot. Last sub packed on the pounds and I have decided cut away, cut away a lot. Actually, I've decided that I am going to lose that weight and get healthy again. Not that I'm not healthy, just I'm just a little, a little chunky. That's all. Uh, so I am healthy, but I want to cut that fat and I am doing it and I'm a weekend and I've already lost over five pounds. So my goal is to break 180, that 180 mark and see how long it takes to, to do that. I'm guessing it might be four to six weeks, but we'll see. So that is my challenge. And, and, and I want to do this just to show kind of what's possible because it's not like I'm, I'm out of shape, but you know, weight loss is hard.

17:12  It's hard if, um, or it can be hard. So, um, you know, when I talk about change in people's lives, I want to be an example to, um, I don't want to just sit here and talk about this stuff. I, I try to live it. And so this is just one way I want to put it out there that that change is possible. You know, you know, the, the folks who say that, you know, people never change. Um, I disagree, disagree vehemently with that and I'm certainly feel like I'm an example of that. So the weight loss challenge currently 200 pounds or are a 194 right about now. And, uh, we'll see. We'll see how quickly it takes to get sub 180. And, uh, I would love to be a success story and be, uh, be an example of what's actually possible in this world. So, all right, that's what's up.
